The project SoS - Social Sensing aims to apply the paradigm of the opportunistic crowdsensing, especially data from Social Media, in the Emergency Management environment.
During events raising social alarm, such as earthquakes, contents shared by users of social media, if properly analyzed, allow you to have a real-time picture of the evolving situation, the areas involved and the consequences.
Then, users act as social sensors and their contents are valuable sources of information for the emergency managers.
This two-years project, funded by Registro.it, is carried out by a group of researchers from the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT-CNR) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa.
In the project are also involved researchers of the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the Institute of Science and Technology (ISTI-CNR) and Computational Linguistics (ILC-CNR) in Pisa and the Department of Engineering 'Information, University of Pisa (DIP-IET).
